Department of English was established in 1967 and is one of the oldest departments of Kalindi College. English Honours course was a later addition that was established in 1988-89. The department has always made its presence felt due to its pedagogical excellence as well as active contribution of its faculty to the cultural and corporate life of college. Among the predecessor teachers, who were trendsetters for their successors, were: Ms. Nishamani Goswami who pioneered the Cultural Clubs, Ms. Indu Bala Arora initiated the trend of theatre performances, Ms. Manjit S. Singh was deeply involved with Shakespeare Society and initiated the Academic Journal of the College and Ms. Nilima Chandra nurtured the Students’ Union for many years. It is evident that the faculty who have succeeded the aforementioned trailblazers have not only maintained the same active work ethic but also set new trends in excellence. Dr Chaity Das been Co-Convenor of the Academic Journal from 2012-13 till date. Ms. Monica Zutshi has been Convenor (English Section) College Magazine, Pravah 2012-13 till date.
The study of English as a major discipline enhances the interpretive and expressive skills of students. It equips the students with both a rigorous knowledge of the subject as well as critical and analytical abilities. In the study of English as a major discipline, students are exposed to an intensive study of the literary field and the tools that literature uses in its analysis. The study of English as a minor subject is also helpful in broadening the understanding of socio-political context and sharpening language skills. The Applied Courses in English help students to have a greater understanding of the application of methodologies used in the practice of literature and its allied fields.
The English Literary Society christened “Mitrakshar”, is an active departmental society that promotes academic activities and endeavours. It was formed to provide a platform to the students to develop and showcase their talents and supplement classroom learning. It invites guests from outside the college to give students lectures, conducts workshops and organises film screenings. It also hols inter-college and intra-college contests such as Creative Writing, Paper Reading and Self-Composed Poetry Recitation competitions which instil confidence in the students.
Armed with a degree in English, a wide scope of careers is open to students, namely, Academics (Language, Literature, Linguistics, Art, History, Gender & Cultural studies, etc.); Media and Journalism; Civil Services; Fine arts and Performing Arts; Writing/Publishing; Law; Human Resources Departments in MNCs; MBA, etc.
